Data flows by feature
Optional text services run only after the user deliberately invokes them. Schools can evaluate the free core reader without using those services.
| Feature | What is processed | Destination |
|---|---|---|
| Fonts, spacing, overlays and line focus | Page content stays in the browser. Preferences use Chrome storage and may sync through the managed Google account. | No page text sent to Dyslexly |
| Listen aloud | Selected or visible text is spoken with voices available on the device. | No page text sent to Dyslexly |
| Make easier, Explain this and AI grammar | Only text the user actively selects is submitted. Dyslexly does not write the selection or result to its database or application logs. | Dyslexly API, then Anthropic |
| Dictionary, standard grammar and Translate | Only the selected word or text is submitted when the user invokes that tool. | DictionaryAPI/Wikipedia, LanguageTool or Google Translate |
| Anonymous product telemetry | Random installation ID, extension version, event name and country-level location. Full IP addresses, page text, browsing history and hostnames are not stored in product events. | Dyslexly and Google Analytics 4 |
| Licence validation | The licence key is checked and the result is cached locally for 24 hours. | Dyslexly API |
Why Chrome requests each permission
Dyslexly uses Manifest V3. Website access is required because the product changes the presentation of ordinary webpages.
storage
Save reading preferences, local statistics, trial state and licence status.
activeTab and tabs
Apply a chosen action to the current tab and detect protected pages where Chrome blocks extensions.
scripting and access to websites
Insert the reader controls that change fonts, spacing, colours and focus on ordinary webpages.
contextMenus
Offer selected-text actions from Chrome’s right-click menu.
clipboardWrite
Copy a result only when the user chooses Copy.
offscreen
Support extension audio and document-processing workflows that cannot run in the popup.
